Privacy is a controversial issue in the Digital Age. Schools have an obligation to ensure student safety, both physical and virtual. When using the Internet or the network, this requires keeping close tabs on student’ activity when they are using computers. Do you think this violates students’ privacy? Justify your opinion and consider both points of view.
I do not think students’ privacy is violated physically nor virtually when they are monitored by their teacher. The teacher is there to protect students’ from what is not known. All students have to abide by the rules of the teacher and school officials when it comes to web use. Their privacy should be guarded from predators and surfing prohibited websites.
Virtually it is hard to protect students’ privacy from online use. Software can be put in place to protect students from visiting prohibited sites, but this does not violate their privacy. I think all students online use should be monitored. So what if they think their privacy is violated, I think their safety should be more of a major concern.
Teachers have to be careful what information they put on school websites about their students. They should obtain permissions from parents and guardians concerning the information that will be used. I don’t think there is a violation of student privacy physically or virtually. As long as parental consent is given, no privacy violation to monitor or to use information has occurred.
Chapter Twelve: Question 1
As emerging technologies continue to affect education, there is little question that the role of the teacher will change. Imagine yourself teaching a class in 20 years. How do you think your role would be different from the typical teacher’s role today?
In twenty years, technology should have advanced. We should by this point work through virtual learning. I think teachers will do less hands-on teaching because new technology will be available. The teacher will guide the student through virtual learning. He/she will have lesson plans at their fingertips and other resources they need. Today’s teachers are more hands on doing a lot of physical teaching where as tomorrows’ teachers will use less-hands on techniques and more technology.
The reading discussed Google glasses bring a virtual world into the classroom. I would like to believe that the entire classroom would be designed in a virtual world. Where learning would take place by moving objects in a virtual classroom on a virtual screen.
Today’s teachers do not work in virtual classrooms because not all teachers have the luxury of wireless Internet in their classroom. A virtual classroom is designed with voice recognition so teachers could speak a subject and the information appears on a virtual screen. Today’s teachers do have Promethean board that offer a lot of technology, but voice recognition is not available.
This week assignments were to create a Thinklink and a Scoop.it. I have used Thinklink for another class so this was a refresher for me. Thinklink is a great resource used to link different resources that can be performed by linking videos, articles, and other sources. My topic is to building a website. There were many images to choose from and lots of sources to pull from.
Scoop.it was a lot of fun. Now, if anyone will have any issues it will be me. The first scoop.it I created took no time, but it locked my screen and I was unable to logout and go back in a get the embed code or do anything. The only solution was to delete my online history and create a new account under a new email address because my original scoop.it was still locked. I was a bit frustrated since I was finish and had to start over, but it did not take long. Scoop.it made the process of finding articles and videos very easy and interesting.
